The Hidden Cost of Manual Dispatching
In any discrete manufacturing environment, hundreds of planned production orders are waiting for a decision every day. The questions pile up fast: which ones to allocate materials to, and which the team will kit in the coming days? Which are overdue, and which customer order is moving with priority? The judgment call is so extensive and complex that in practice, companies often skip it. As soon as someone registers an order, the system releases all of its shop orders at once, regardless of material availability or due date.
As a result, order management shifts down to the shop floor, where company-wide priorities give way to local, shop-level ones. Total management overhead rises sharply, and with it the “wasted effort.” A shop supervisor prepares an order for production, only to find it isn’t fully kitted. Once that happens, the team shelves the order and loses the preparation time all over again.
